「ねぷたの語源は、津軽弁で“眠い”をいみする“ねぷてぇ”だといわれています。昔、農村には川や海に灯籠とともに眠気を流す“ねむり流し”という夏の農家の行事がありました。過酷な農作業中に襲う睡魔を追い払い、農作業での安全などを祈願したのです」

They had an event called "washing the sleepiness away' as a summer farming village event before to wash the sleepiness away to the river and sea with lanterns. They prayed for safety in agriculture, because people often get sleepy during the work, so they wanted to wash it away by doing this event.'
